What's Different?

Sagelight was directly inspired by Dungeon World (DW) and Worlds of Adventure (WoA) and is not endorsed or affiliated in any other manner with Dungeon World, Worlds of Adventure and/or its creators. Sagelight was designed and formated in Google Docs.
As per CC BY-SA4.0, changes and differences are listed below.

Player Rules

  • Dice - Moved from (DW) dice set involving multiple different sided die to (WoA) dice set using only six sided die for all rolls

  • What to Know - Covers concepts found in Dungeon World rule book such as play to find out what happens

  • Character Creation - Stats and modifiers are now called Traits. Following the (WoA) format, there are  only 5 Traits as described in the Trait Description section.

  • Trait - Might -  Pulled from (WoA)

  • Trait - Agility - Pulled from (WoA)

  • Trait - Wisdom - Similar to (WoA) Versed. Though includes faith as an aspect of wisdom, interpreted as strength of belief in that knowledge.

  • Trait - Spirit - Pulled from (WoA)

  • Trait - Focus - Similar to (WoA) Cunning. I liked how Cunning represented wits and acuity but by definition, cunning is deceit. Focus felt like a better way to describe concentration and perception.

  • Character Growth -  Traditional leveling by collecting experience points is removed. Growth is determined by the group and is represented by a single Trait increase. Single Trait cap taken from (WoA).

  • Making Moves and Rolling Dice -  Moves are triggered and made in the same fashion as in both (DW) & (WoA)

  • Tags -  Wording and formatting pulled from (WoA). Minor adjustment and additions made to list.

  • Defy the Odds - Name replaces (DW) Defy Danger, wording modified from (WoA).

  • Discern realities - Name taken from (DW), wording modified from (WoA).

  • Spout Lore - Name taken from (DW), wording modified from (WoA).

  • Parley - Name taken from (DW), wording modified from (WoA).

  • Hack and Slash - Name taken from (DW), wording modified from (WoA).

  • Strike Them Down - Name taken from (WoA), wording modified from (WoA).

  • Work in Tandem - Name taken from (WoA), wording modified from (WoA). Replaces (DW) Aid.

  • Last Breath - Name taken from (DW), wording modified from (DW).

  • Strength in Numbers -  Monster combat mechanic from (DW) added as a player mechanic.

Game Master Rules

  • Game Master Moves - Taken from (DW) GM Section When to Make a Move, Pg 164

  • Game Master Actions - Take from (DW) GM Moves, Pg 163

  • A 16HP Dragon -  Quoted from https://www.latorra.org/2012/05/15/a-16-hp-dragon/

  • Creating A World - Combination of (DW) GM Agenda & Principles, Pg 159-160

  • Creating a Spotlight - Concept pulled from (WoA V.1)

  • Location, Monster, & Danger Moves - Concept pulled from (DW) GM Moves

  • Strength in Numbers - Combat mechanic from (DW) for multiple foes. Included as a beneficial player mechanic.

6d6 Discern Realities World Building Table

The Narrator starts the game by asking the Adventurers various questions

What happened here recently?

(1) The wall was breached

(2) The dead began to rise

(3) The Giants began departing from the world

(4) A Dragon appeared on the horizon

(5) The forests began to die

(6) The storm brought something with it

What is about to happen?

(1) The fulfillment of an apocalyptic prophecy

(2) The death of a tyrant

(3) The birth of a savior

(4) The arrival of a foreign army

(5) The complete destruction of a large city

(6) The return of a long-lost civilization

What should I be on the lookout for?

(1) Spies in every village and tavern

(2) An opportunistic Prince seeking power

(3) Someone seeking to incriminate you

(4) Those seeking to corrupt you

(5) A rival you just learned is still alive

(6) Desperate refugees

What here is useful or valuable to me?

(1) A musty tome filled with long forgotten rituals

(2) A dragon with a long memory

(3) A sword forged by the gods

(4) A giant seeking protection

(5) A king and all of his resources

(6) A wall of vaguely familiar runes

Who’s really in control here?

(1) An ancient dragon

(2) A bored god

(3) A wizard on a power trip

(4) The dreams of a sleeping child

(5) A hidden cult

(6) A demon seeking revenge

What here is not what it appears to be?

(1) A tribe of orcs

(2) The court alchemist

(3) The old lady who sells pies

(4) The shack in the swamp

(5) The tailor’s mirror

(6) The nearby ruins

Roll 8d6, and each player in turn assigns one of them to a question.

When all questions have had a die assigned to them, set the two remaining dice to the side and

start extrapolating the results and fleshing out the world.

Now use the total of the two remaining dice to determine the state of the opening situation:

10+ You clearly have the upper hand

7-9 You’re in a tense standoff

6- You’re clearly at a disadvantage

Narrate why you’re in that state and begin play.
